Coordinating the SACE | Recognition in the SACE | University studies

University studies

The SACE Board has recognition arrangements for Stage 2 students undertaking university studies.

Recognition granted is 10 credits for one semester, and 20 credits for two semesters or full-year subject.

Recognition of university studies is not granted against the compulsory requirements of the SACE at Stage 2: Activating Identities and Futures or Research Project (at Stage 2), literacy and numeracy requirements, or the requirement for 60 credits at C– or better at Stage 2.

Eligible courses are undertaken at a university or other higher education provider offering qualifications at Bachelor degree level (Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) levels 7 and above). Providers must also be accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA).

Foundation courses do not count towards recognition of university studies.

Prior to enrolment, it is important for students to learn more about the course they intend to study to confirm its eligibility for recognition.

Recognition is granted if the student has demonstrated that he or she has gained a ‘satisfactory achievement’ in that subject, in accordance with the university assessment and reporting processes.

Satisfactory achievement in any university subject will be reported on the Record of Achievement as ‘University Studies’ and ‘granted’ with the relevant number of credits.

If a student undertakes both a SACE Board Stage 2 subject and university studies in the same area of study, only the SACE Board-accredited subject will gain credits towards the SACE.

The application for recognition of university studies is a 2-step process:

  1. Pre-approval
    1. Schools work with students to apply for pre-approval by submitting Stage 1 and Stage 2 equivalent studies application (Form 12) before the commencement of their studies
    2. The SACE Board verifies course eligibility and advises any preclusions with SACE subjects
