Meet the artist

Hannah Mackenzie, 2020 Flinders University Visual Arts Award recipient

How do you feel to be an award winner at the 2020 SACE Art Show?

My artwork even being in the show was an honour, let alone winning an award. I was very shocked and surprised but very happy and excited.

What was the inspiration behind your work?

I wanted to focus on showing how I grew up as I believe it allows for a better connection to the piece. This idea inspired me to look at the houses I grew up in and the process of moving in and out of the houses.

Tell us about the creative process you took with your work.

From looking at moving, my teacher and I had the idea of using boxes to represent packing my belongings. I then went to each of the eight houses and took images that brought up many memories. Following that, I researched artists and experimented using different techniques, finally coming to the conclusion of drawing the houses using fine line pen. I also added the number and years of each house, painted in a significant colour that represented a memory.

What advice would you have to Stage 2 Visual Arts students in 2020?

Try and not procrastinate, although it’s very hard not to. Use your study lessons as much as you can especially towards the end and be organised by writing all your due dates for every class and what you’re going to do each day.

What pathway have you taken after your SACE?

University of South Australia – Bachelor of Interior Architecture.
