Meet the artist

Carmen Marino, 2021 IEU SACE Art Show Award recipient.

How do you feel to be an award winner at the 2021 SACE Art Show?

I was very surprised and did not expect it at all.

What was the inspiration behind your work?

My artwork was based specifically on the 2020 Australian Bushfire crises and more broadly on climate change. I was inspired by this catastrophic event and wanted to create something that represented it as a warning sign for what's to come in the future hence the title "what was unprecedented, is now our future."

I was also inspired to explore how the immense loss and devastation was experienced by both the communities and the environment which is evident through the words hidden within the artwork. A big artistic influence of mine was German artist, Anslem Kiefer as i took great conceptual and aesthetic influence and inspiration from his work.

Tell us about the creative process you took with your work?

As this was apart of folio the creative process was worked on throughout the year. As i got deeper into exploring different ways to represent my message, the artwork evolved. This happened through explorations of trial and error with different artisitc and aesthetic styles.

What advice would you have to Stage 2 Visual Arts students in 2021?

The advice I would give is to keep on top of the folio and don't leave it to the last minute and to listen to your teacher's advice.

What pathway are you taking after your SACE – university/TAFE/jobs?

I am currently studying a Double Bachelor degree in Law and Commerce at the University of Adelaide.
